Frugal Recipes

Trying to eat on as little money as possible.

Toast Treats

Sometimes we have an over abundance of breads and condiments in the pantry, but not much else. This has led me to making  ‘treats’ from what is on hand. These are for snacks, or can be used for breakfast and lunch if you add a bowl of fruit.

Toast

Appropriate fillings

  • Cinnamon and sugar
  • Peanut butter
  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Peanut butter and fluff
  • Butter and jelly
  • Cheese and meet
  • Sliced banana and peanut butter
  • Thinly sliced apple and peanut butter

Each treat will consist of two pieces of toast and your chosen filling. Make the sandwich and cut into one of the following:

  • 4 squares
  • 4 triangles
  • 4 strips

NOTE: You could also use a cookie cutter to cut out the center for your child. You could then eat the outside yourself.

Rice Meals

Rice meals are cheap and easy to make. My family loves them, in the right combinations.

The first step in a rice meal is to actually get the rice on the stove. It is cooked separately from the rest of the ingredients.

Then, warm a fry pan and pick and choose what you would like to cook up from your pantry or refrigerator. I like to keep this quick and simple, using previously cooked meats as well as some vegetables.

Here are some combinations that you may enjoy. Simply put everything in the fry pan with some butter and warm. You will top the rice with the mixture that you choose.

  • Ground beef, corn and peas.
  • Turkey, carrots and broccoli.
  • Chicken, corn and carrots.

Let us know about your rice meal creations in the comments. Thank you.

Yogurt Toppers

I usually only eat one kind of yogurt. I am aware that this is a pickyness factor for me. I like Dannon Low-Fat Vanilla Yogurt. I buy the large containers when I can, which is generally cheaper than buying multiple smaller containers.

I do many things with this yogurt. Besides eating mixed with mellons and using it in smoothies, I also put toppers on it. Here are some yogurt topper ideas for you:

  • Mixed dried fruit
  • Granola
  • Fresh berries
  • Fresh fruit
  • Crushed pineapple
  • Tuna and diced apple
  • Tuna, diced apple and diced celery

How about sharing your yogurt topper successes with us in the comments section. Thank you.

Pasta/Rice Sides Add-Ins

During the same sale that was going on when I purchased the Hamburger Helper, there was also a sale on Pasta/Rice sides. I ended up purchasing a bunch of these for only .75 as well.

We don’t add a lot of meat to these. Maybe 1/2 – 1/3 cup of meat, and usually only chicken or turkey.

Vegetables are also great add-ins.

How about trying some of these combinations:

  • 1/2 cup of chicken, and 1/2 can each of corn and peas.
  • 1/2 cup turkey, and 1/4 can each of corn, green beans and carrots.
  • 1/4 cup each of chicken and turkey and some broccoli.

What combinations can you create? Share your successful creations with us in the comments section. Thank you.

Hamburger Helper Add-Ins

Do you like Hamburger Helper? My daughter does. It isn’t something that I usually purchase, but a few months ago I had a few coupons for multiple box purchases. The Hamburger Helper was on sale and cost only .75 a box with coupons for the name brand boxes.

We do different things with the different types of helpers. We have been known to add chicken instead of beef to the beef stroganoff, so we know that you can mix and match meats. Use any kind of meat that you like in any of the different helpers. You can also do meat mixes. Why not use:

  • Turkey
  • Ham
  • Pork roast
  • Turkey and chicken mix

We also add vegetables. We have been known to add just one, or a combination of different vegetables:

  • Corn
  • Peas
  • Carrots
  • Corn and peas
  • Carrots and green beans
  • Broccoli

You can do many things with Hamburger Helper. How about sharing some of your creations in the comments? Thank you.
