5 Frugal Fruits and How to Use Them

There are five fruits that are generally cheaper than others in our area. These fruits are the basis for many recipes and snacks within our home.  While the prices have gone up over the last few years on each of these, they are still more affordable than many other fruits. For the purpose of this article, I am including berries as fruits.

  • Bananas: Usually .59 to .69 a pound. You can find these cheaper in the discount carts, if your store has them, when they get slightly too ripe. These are perfect for making homemade breads and muffins.
  • Kiwi: Often found at a rate of 3 for $1.00, but sometimes these can be purchased at 4 for $1.00.
  • Utility apples: Generally found during the fall months, these cheap apples usually come in a handy heavy paper bag with a handle. The prices on these apples vary, but are cheaper than the popular types of apples.
  • Strawberries: Found on sale for $2.50 per container.
  • Peaches: These can often be found at reasonable cost, which varies week to week.

These five fruits will aid you in creating many dishes over the course of a week. They can be used at snack time, or with any meal.

  • Bananas, apples and peaches make great additions to a basic muffin or bread recipe.
  • Apples and peaches will aid you in making delicious pies, as well as crisps and cobblers.
  • Bananas or apples, added to pancake batter, will add nutrition to your breakfast meal.
  • Combining all of the fruits listed, and topping them with yogurt or whipped topping, make them usable for desserts, snacks or dinner side dishes.
  • Each of the fruits above will make wonderful fillings for crepes, if yogurt is also used.
  • Combine two or more of these fruits to create a yummy juice blend.

Fruits add a lot of nutrition to your meal plans, and should be consumed each day.
