Using sales and clearance racks to stock your pantry will save you a bunch of money. It is fairly easy to track sales using the fliers you receive in the mail, as well as those that come in the newspaper. However, there are a few other types of sales that you will be able to look for when you are actually in the grocery store:
-
In-store specials are not always advertised outside the store. They will be indicated near the sale item at the store.
-
Clearance racks and carts are placed at different locations in the stores local to me. They are not easy to miss by any means.
-
The Walmart in Bangor, Maine has a couple of Oops! Racks. This is where they place items they have baked too much of, such as breads, rolls, cakes and cookies.
A couple things to keep in mind:
-
Most items from the Oops! Rack can be frozen and used throughout the month. Just take out what you will use in a day the afternoon before.
-
Clearance items sometimes consist of fruits and vegetables that are “going by”. Purchase these and make other foods with them to freeze.
NOTE: What can be made with those not so fresh fruits and vegetables? How about banana bread, apple cinnamon muffins or carrot cake.
ACTION STEPS:
-
Make a shopping list according to sales in your area. Shop and pay attention to how much money you are saving by not purchasing more expensive brands.
-
While at each store, check out the clearance and Oops! Racks. Stock up on what you know you will use.
-
When you get home, bake an item using not so fresh fruit or vegetables. Go ahead and eat it now. Does it taste good? Be sure to begin picking up more of these items. Those breads, muffins and cakes can all be frozen.
