Stocking Up at Farmer’s Markets

Farmer’s Markets provide many items to stock your pantry with. Some markets are even open once in a while during the winter, so you may be able to start shopping them now. They may not have a lot of fresh produce right now, given the cold weather, but they will have other items.

Fresh fruits and vegetables purchased at a farmer’s markets can be preserved for later use, as can meats. Canning is a common method of preserving. Fresh baked breads and muffins can be frozen. You may even start to find herbs that have been started already, that can be brought home and placed in a windowsill. The herbs you harvest from these plants can be harvested and used fresh, or dried and preserved for later use.

NOTE: If you wait until about an hour before the market closes, you may even be able to negotiate deals :-)

ACTION STEPS:

  1. Visit your local farmer’s market to see what is available in your area.

  2. Go at the end of the day and try to negotiate a deal or two.

I like your style and will follow your posts regularly Shannon.

So happy to see more bloggers encouraging the use of local farmers for everyday needs. I think the healthiest thing for us as a country is to support local and eat local. Good health and happiness always starts at home!!
